Description:
The “Kilobots” installation aims to explore the dynamics of algorithmic behavior within a collective organism and to look up close to the phenomenon of swarm intelligence. The exhibit showcases a swarm of diminutive Arduino-powered robots, which execute simple actions from which complex behaviors can emerge. Resembling schools of fish, flocks of birds, and more so, a swarm of insects, the installation prompts questions: Why do they avoid collisions? How do they navigate their surroundings? Who orchestrates their movements? How do they achieve coordinated behavior? The Kilobots, integral to this installation, are open-source small robots designed at Harvard in 2012.
